Stronger collaboration needed to achieve Ghana’s NDCs

Ghana - 19 October, 2022

Stakeholders from various state agencies in the Western North region have called for stronger collaboration among themselves to achieve Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The call was made at a regional workshop organized by Tropenbos Ghana and facilitated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Over 30 personnel from across the region benefitted from the workshop. The workshop presented Ghana’s updated NDC document to the stakeholders and trained them to lead and implement climate change initiatives in their various sectors.

In his presentation, Mr. Daniel Lamptey, a Senior Programme Officer at EPA highlighted the emission reduction targets of the various sectors of Ghana’s economy and activities to be implemented at the landscape level to achieve the targets. In the updated NDC document, Ghana’s program of actions to achieve emission reduction targets includes reforestation, afforestation, wildfire management, and climate-smart agricultural practices among others.

Speaking to Tropenbos Ghana after the workshop, the Planning Officer for the Sefwi-Wiawso Municipal Assembly, Mr. William Oduro-Boampong described the workshop as timely; “I had little knowledge of the NDCs but now, I have gained a deeper understanding of it. The knowledge acquired will enable my office to undertake activities that will contribute to the realization of Ghana’s emission reduction targets.” The Western North EPA director, Mr. Eyiah Mensah, added that despite challenges confronting his outfit, they have embarked on several activities to sensitize the public on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Mr. Eyiah Mensah was of the view that if government agencies in the region work together, significant strides will be made in the fight against climate change.
